Dear Hurt-Comfort Exchange Author,

Thank you very much for offering one of my fandoms! Hurt/comfort is one of my all-time favorite fic tropes, so honestly I’m pretty much guaranteed to love anything you write for me in this exchange. :) My fandoms, freeforms, etc. are in alphabetical order below.

I’ve included prompts for each fandom in case you’re looking for ideas, but all my prompts are very, very optional! If you already have something in mind for the freeform we matched on, absolutely go for it. :D You can also scroll to the end of this letter for some extra freeforms that I liked but may not have requested to match on in my signup.

My AO3 account is open to treating!

General Likes:

I love all kinds of hurt/comfort (and hurt-no-comfort), especially sickfic and angst. I love steady, self-disciplined characters, competence, hard choices, moral gray areas, complicated and difficult relationships, loyalty and devotion, sacrifice, obsesssion, suspicion, pining, secrets and masks, conflict, guilt, loss, trauma... as well as affection, trust, intimacy, domestic moments, friendship, and quiet slice-of-life. I love darkness and haunted spaces, cosmic horror, magical realism, scenery porn, and worldbuilding about places and cultures and histories.

I’m a big fan of stories that fit into the canon universe rather than diverging from it in major ways, and I also love post-canon stories about characters later in life, bittersweet reunions, and reflections on time and change and lost chances.

Genfic and slash are both great (including preslash, get-together, or established relationship), as well as platonically-intimate relationships that fall somewhere in between. I love subtle gestures of intimacy and indirect touches (wearing someone else’s jacket, smoking off their cigarette), and forced proximity tropes of all kinds (snowed in, only one room, one bed, one blanket). Trope subversions are also great. :D

A few more specific notes:

Darkfic: I like dark stories a lot, and am very open to explorations of dark themes and profoundly flawed characters or choices. I don’t need things to get better or be resolved in the end — give me whatever ending you think suits the story, whether that means happy, ambiguous, bittersweet, or outright depressing and hopeless.

I also love dark settings, often literally (tombs, caves, night, storms), and anything tending toward cosmic or psychological horror. Lighter stories in more cheerful settings are also welcome! I certainly don’t need everything to be sadness and rain. ;) I’m just saying, if you did want to write something dark for these fandoms, I’m totally here for it.

Iron woobies: I love seeing characters who are (or at least try to be) stoic about their suffering, either hiding it from other characters and insisting they’re fine, or else acknowledging that there’s a problem but trying not to be a burden while they work through it (...until they reach a breaking point and just can’t anymore). I love resilient characters who can keep their composure under stress, and proud or even arrogant characters who have an image to maintain and don’t want to be seen showing weakness. Also, non-stoic characters who may seem emotionally open, but still have their own boundaries, or who may seem flippant or careless, but will always come through when it counts. <3

Hurt/minimal-to-no-comfort: My favorite h/c stories tend to focus on the hurt at least as much as the comfort, rather than being primarily fluff. I’d also be totally fine with a hurt-no-comfort outcome for any of my requested freeforms — maybe comfort is offered but rejected, or doesn’t actually help much, or backfires and makes things worse, or the hurt character hides their distress so well that the one who would have comforted them never knows... Tl;dr, hurt/comfort is great; hurt/even-more-hurt is also great. XD

Do-Not-Wants:

❌ Explicit sex. (Fade-to-black or otherwise non-explicit is fine. I generally prefer a G or T rating for sexual content, though I’m fine with higher ratings for violence, language, etc.)

❌ Non-canonical death of major canon characters.

❌ AU, including setting-change AU, stuff like soulmates, wingfic, genderswap, etc., and major canon divergence such as changing the outcome of an important mission or a character’s canon backstory. (Small-scale canon divergence is okay.)

❌ Crossover or fusion. (Notes: For show canons based on books, incorporating book-canon elements into a story is perfectly fine. For TLTR, outright supernatural horror instead of handwavy science is also fine. For Star Trek, I really only want the universe of TOS and the original six movies — please disregard the AOS/Reboot movies, Discovery, etc.)

❌ First- or second-person narration, unless in epistolary fic, diary entries, or similar.

❌ Requested characters using non-canon pet names or terms of endearment like “baby,” “honey,” etc.

❌ Overtly romantic/sexual pairings within the Iron Triangle. (Canon-typical off-the-chart levels of platonic intimacy are fine. XD Highly unsubtle OT3 vibes, also fine. I’d just prefer nothing overtly sexual.)

Requested Fandoms:

鹿鼎記 | The Duke of Mount Deer (Hong Kong 1984)

General Thoughts:

Hah, well, this is my fandom-of-one, which I’m going to keep on requesting even though I know the chances that anyone else is into it are very very small. XD

(Here’s my canon promo from Yuletide and my very spoilery series recap post, and here’s where you can watch the show with English subs.)

I love how well-meaning and yet deeply flawed both of the main characters are, and how they keep struggling to maintain the fiction of an equal friendship in spite of the massive power imbalance between them. They both have conflicting identities to juggle, secrets they share only with each other and secrets they keep from each other; they're both manipulative in different ways, and they have moments of protecting each other and moments of selfishly putting each other at risk. There are some intense loyalty tropes here, right alongside a lot of deception and mutual suspicion, alongside... all the chaos of a trickster street-urchin getting mixed up in the affairs of the imperial court. XD

These guys have so much drama, the whole insurmountable social distance between Emperor and subject, all the kowtowing and swearing fealty, the threats of beheading, the magnanimous acts of forgiveness, promotion, demotion, rewards, reprimands... and yet things often seem to balance back out anyway, because Wai Siu-Bou is just so goddamn irrepressible, and most of the Emperor’s efforts to control him simply fail. I love how their boyhood wrestling matches gradually become a sort of metaphor for their whole dynamic, with so much external and internal conflict.

I also love the earlier scenes where they’re genuinely friends, and I love how hard they both try to keep it that way, against all the odds. Fluffy/comic takes on the fandom are entirely welcome. With all its (admittedly numerous) faults, I really do love this show, and I adore pretty much every canon interaction between the main characters, and would be delighted to see more of them doing just about anything. :)

My requested h/c freeforms are below, organized by “hurt” character. I didn’t specifically request “both hurt” in my signup, but feel free to take that route, too!

I mean, honestly my all-time favorite fanfic trope is just your standard run-of-the-mill h/c setup where one character is sick/hurt/sad and the other one tries to help, or just stays with them while they weather it out. Plot totally optional. There are probably a zillion ways this could go, but here are some options:

  • Maybe the Emperor is ill but doesn’t want anyone to know (since his ministers and officials already look down on him for being young, and he doesn’t want to appear weak in front of them), so he tries to go about his usual imperial business, with Wai Siu-Bou in tow, and either Wai Siu-Bou eventually notices something is wrong, or the Emperor eventually tells him, or just collapses or whatever. Maybe Wai Siu-Bou devises some way to help him get back to his quarters without anyone noticing he’s ill, or just helps him get through a very unpleasant day of meeting with foreign dignitaries or signing edicts?

(Wai Siu-Bou helping the Emperor dress and undress as his personal attendant also seems like a perfect setup for either one of them noticing some kind of concealed illness or distress that the other one was maybe sort of hiding, but that they might not be trying too hard to hide from each other.)

  • So there’s that one scene where Wai Siu-Bou wakes up and rushes to the Emperor’s quarters in the middle of the night, and the Emperor tells the guards to let him in, and then invites him to sleep there. Further development on this? Does Wai Siu-Bou ever take the Emperor up on the offer to stay? Do they make a habit of it? Does Wai Siu-Bou in fact sleep on the floor? There’s at least one later scene where he has a nightmare about the Emperor being in danger — does he perhaps have a nightmare sometime when he’s in the Emperor’s quarters? Does he end up with even more angst about all his secrets and not even being able to tell the Emperor what he’s having nightmares about?
  • Or, the Emperor is ill and summons Wai Siu-Bou to his room for company/diversion, or because he’d rather have Wai Siu-Bou looking after him than the other palace eunuchs/attendants. How do things go? Maybe Wai Siu-Bou knows some folk remedies from his hometown and offers to try them out? (Do they work? Do they totally not work, but the Emperor finds them amusing and sort of naively charming anyway?) Or maybe the imperial physician leaves Wai Siu-Bou with instructions for looking after the Emperor, applying salves, giving him medicine/tea, keeping him warm? I’d be equally open to Wai Siu-Bou being great at this or terrible at this. XD Or a little of both.
  • On a side note, Wai Siu-bou seems really proud of his massage-giving skills and rather eager to try them out on the Emperor, so... feel free to incorporate that. XD

  • Maybe something early on, when they’re still meeting up in the sparring room for wrestling and snacks — one of them shows up for a wrestling match despite feeling under the weather, and either the other one notices and offers to skip wrestling for the day, or they do wrestle and the one who’s unwell loses immediately, or starts feeling worse as they fight and eventually asks to stop, or faints, etc.
  • Wai Siu-Bou is canonically poisoned all the damn time. Does he ever show symptoms while he’s around the Emperor? Does he try to hide them? What excuses does he make?
  • Or, just in general, what would happen if Wai Siu-Bou was injured or ill one day (maybe after one of his adventures out of the city) and the Emperor found out about it? Would he pay him a visit in his quarters? Or have Wai Siu-Bou brought to his own imperial rooms to recover there? Maybe this is one of those times when Wai Siu-Bou gets injured while protecting the Emperor, warding off an assassination attempt or similar? (Possibly even better if it happens late in canon and the Emperor is conflicted and half angry about it and has no idea how to deal with Wai Siu-Bou being earnestly self-sacrificing on his behalf while also being kind of his enemy...)
  • In canon, we never see the Emperor drink alcohol until the very last episode, but I feel like Wai Siu-Bou would have been eager to get him drunk much earlier (and the Emperor might have been amused and happy to go along with it). Maybe it’s the Emperor’s first time drinking, and his tolerance is not great? Maybe they both get drunk and confess some things they shouldn’t, or get into an argument? Or maybe they have a great time, but one or both of them is hungover the next morning? (As a side note, I’d love to see Wai Siu-Bou corrupting the Emperor with dice games/gambling as well. XD )
  • OR, I would also be into a heavy-angst, hurt-no-comfort instance of the Emperor trying to drown his feelings about Wai Siu-Bou in alcohol. It seems like something that might easily have been going on for a long time, not necessarily a new thing that happened for the first and only time in that final show episode.
  • Awkward efforts at comfort after Wai Siu-Bou gets hurt during a wrestling match? Since clearly the Emperor is... not very gentle with Wai Siu-Bou, and at least sometimes brings his political frustrations to the sparring room and takes them out on his friend. And feels bad about it afterward, but doesn’t seem to have a great grasp of what to do or say that would actually help...
  • Note on Names: For character names, etc., whatever transliteration style you prefer is fine, Mandarin or Cantonese (e.g. 韋小寶 can be "Wei Xiaobao," "Wei Xiao Bao," "Wai Siu Po," "Wai Siu Bou," etc.).

盗墓笔记重启 | The Lost Tomb Reboot (TV)

    General Thoughts:

Look, I mean... the hurt/comfort and platonic intimacy tropes on this show are truly beyond anything, so seriously just more of canon would be amazing. All the domestic stuff at Wushanju and during the Warehouse 11 sequence, Pangzi putting blankets on Wu Xie, carrying him, both of them sleeping against each other’s shoulders all the damn time, canonical huddling for warmth, canonical only-one-bed and how they always seem to sleep side by side even if there are no beds and everyone is just lying on the ground in a cave... and of course, everyone being a BAMF basically 100% the time whether they’re injured or not, protecting each other, hiding their injuries from each other, getting very pissed off about it when they find out... I’m very much here for all of this.

For this request, the only pairing I’m asking for is Wu Xie & Wang Pangzi, but that being said, I definitely think of the Iron Triangle as a unit, and I’d be very happy for Xiaoge to be around as well, either taking equal part with the others in the story or just dropping in for a cameo, as he does. And though I’m not looking for romantic fic for this fandom, Iron Triangle OT3 vibes are perfectly welcome!

Apart from the hurt/comfort tropes on the show, I also LOVE all the dark underground tomb stuff, dangerous ancient traps and mechanisms, possibly-haunted artifacts, psychological horror, labyrinths, thunder and rainstorms, rescue missions, competence porn, etc. — basically, Tomb Shenanigans in any form. Which is to say: I’ll be delighted with a gift that is pure distilled hurt/comfort with no plot whatsoever, and I’ll also be equally delighted with just one or two hurt/comfort moments built into a story about tomb-adventuring. And maybe some rain. ;)

For my requested freeforms, I’m technically only requesting “hurt Wu Xie,” but I’d also be very happy with “both hurt” (or “all hurt,” if Xiaoge is there). Maybe ideally with different characters hurt in different ways, or at different times? (I love, for instance, how the show staggered the different characters losing and regaining their sight in the Mute Princess Tomb sequence, with just that one brief poignant scene where they were all blind at once.)

Oh, and incorporating stuff from other parts of the DMBJ franchise is fine. :) I’d prefer for the story to be mostly grounded in TLTR, though, since I’m not at all caught up on everything else!

Pairings: Wang Pangzi & Wu Xie

    Medium: Fic

    Freeforms: Hurt Wu Xie

  • Back rubs to ease coughing
  • Back rubs to ease headache
  • Back rubs/hair stroking to help a character sleep
  • Carrying a sick/injured/unconscious character to safety
  • Catching ill/exhausted character as they faint or lose balance
  • Character cradling sick character’s head in their lap
  • Character goes quiet when unwell or in pain
  • Chills/shivering
  • Concussions
  • Coughing up blood
  • Cursed - illness caused by a cursed object
  • Dizziness
  • Driving with a sick/hurt character in the passenger seat
  • Exhausted character A falls asleep while leaning on character B
  • Fever
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Holding someone who is sick
  • Nausea
  • Poison
  • Sick/injured character gets worse after being caught in the rain
  • Sickfic
  • Stomach ache
  • Symptoms of illness start out mild but keep getting worse
  • Traveling with a sick companion
  • Typically stoic character breaks down and admits how ill they feel
  • Vertigo/balance issues
  • Vomiting
  • Watching hurt/sick character sleep
  • Prompts!

  • I mean, tomb shenanigans are great, obviously. XD Some options for hurt/comfort setups in tombs might include poisoned traps (or just poison in general, whether that means breathing toxic air, diving/wading in contaminated water, poisonous dust or spores, venomous underground creatures, etc.), tomb curses, or injuries from a fall or a cave-in. Or, if the characters get trapped for long enough or lose some supplies along the way, maybe dehydration, hunger, cold, sensory deprivation (if it’s dark and they’ve lost their flashlights), exhaustion, sleep deprivation (if it isn’t safe to sleep)...
  • Or maybe they get separated in some labyrinthine tomb, or someone falls down some unexpected opening, and it’s a struggle for them to find each other again. Or maybe one of them is trapped and difficult to rescue safely. Competence porn as they try to solve a problem like escaping from some deep or dangerous place... maybe there’s rising water, or bombs and tripwires, or the need to keep total silence, or... I mean, you get the idea. XD And of course bonus points if meanwhile Wu Xie is ill or poisoned or injured or half-unconscious or whatever.
  • Or the fic could be set after a tomb-raid, maybe with Wu Xie already poisoned or ill but not aware of it yet because symptoms haven’t set in — or he might already be noticing symptoms but trying not to let it show, pretending everything is fine.
  • A lot of the getting-back-home stuff got skipped or glossed over on the show, but I sometimes wondered how the guys ever found their way back from some of the places they ended up, out in the middle of nowhere. So maybe something about that? Like, maybe instead of getting trapped in a tomb, they get lost in the woods on their way out, and can’t find their van. Or there’s heavy fog, or a rainstorm, or the tomb exit turns out to be on a cliffside or down a ravine... or there’s just a long damn way to walk back, and Wu Xie is already this close to passing out...
  • Or they do make it to the van and then we end up with the “driving with a sick/hurt character in the passenger seat” tag. :D Speaking of which, illness while traveling on a bus or train (or airplane or boat or whatever) would be great, too (e.g. something like that bus sequence near the end of ep. 17...).
  • If you want to do something set during the TLTR timeline, feel free to just stick with Wu Xie’s canon lung disease, coughing, fainting, etc., whether in a tomb-raid setting or on a car trip or at Wushanju or wherever else. Pangzi angsting about it is also great, and really an entire fic of just Pangzi piling Wu Xie in extra blankets and trying to make him eat soup would be A+.
  • Apart from Wu Xie’s canon illness, I’d also love other domestic h/c stuff at Wushanju, or the apartment they share during the Warehouse 11 investigation, or a hotel room or really anywhere. Extreme fatigue after a mission. Wu Xie catches cold after being in the rain forever. Curses or poisons on some mysterious artifact they brought back or found somewhere. Nightmares. Intoxication. All The Angst. Injuries incurred stupidly or masochistically due to some of Wu Xie’s more self-destructive tendencies. Guilt, e.g. something like Pangzi getting injured while helping/protecting Wu Xie, and Wu Xie feeling responsible afterward.
  • There are also the various times in canon when Wu Xie has bad reactions to thunderstorms or the sound of thunder. Maybe something in that vein — possibly post-canon? Do thunderstorms bother him after the events of TLTR?

  • Star Trek: The Original Series

    General Thoughts:

I love this show in all its dated, low-budget crackiness, and I especially love Kirk and Spock’s relationship, platonic or otherwise. I’m requesting just the two of them, but you’re welcome to include as much McCoy as you like (and I’m fine with suspiciously-intense platonic OT3 vibes between all three of them). <3 Feel free to include anybody else from TOS canon, too.

In general, I love what a mess Kirk can be and how he somehow manages to hold things together anyway. I love the continual tug-of-war between reason and feeling, as it plays out both externally between Spock and McCoy and internally for everyone. I love the moments when Kirk doubts himself or questions his own motives or fears his command powers are slipping, or when he gets reckless and Spock or McCoy has to step in and do damage control. I love all their mutual reliance and trust and banter and conflict, their sense of duty to the ship and the crew and Starfleet, and all the damage they take all the damn time, and how endlessly resilient they all are.

I love all the moral ambiguity and dubious choices on the show, and Kirk’s obsession with the idea that mankind “wasn’t meant for paradise” and that being human is inherently a struggle. I love Spock being eminently Vulcan, or trying hard to be Vulcan under difficult conditions, and all the ways in which he is genuinely very much not human, and doesn’t want to be.

A few things I’m not particularly into: time-travel or time-loop plots, courtship or soul-bonding, body-sharing/body-swap, rapid aging/de-aging, happiness-pollen type plots where characters’ personalities change dramatically, settings that look exactly like Whatever-Era Earth, and alternate dimensions like the Mirrorverse.

Some settings I do love are the Enterprise itself, alien or uninhabited planets, colonies, space stations, weird drifting ghost ships, shore leave spots, actual Earth (e.g. ST:V-esque Camping Times of the Future), or any truly weird other dimensions that aren’t a what-if AU of canon. I’d be happy with anything set either during the Five-Year Mission or anytime afterward, though I’d prefer to ignore any canon later than The Undiscovered Country. (So, like, if you want to write Old Married K/S in a way that would contradict Generations, that’s totally fine.) I love slice-of life, episode tags, missing scenes, 5+1. Missionfic is also great.

I’ve listed my requested freeforms below, organized by “hurt” character. I didn’t specifically request “both hurt” in my signup, but that option is welcome as well!

  • Prompts!

As a general note: feel free to go minimal on the “comfort” tropes for this fandom. I mean, don’t get me wrong, more intense h/c tropes are definitely also welcome! But there’s a lot of self-discipline and mutual respect of dignity between these guys, which I appreciate, and I also enjoy the kind of competence porn where things are hard for them but they insist they can handle it, and it turns out, yeah, they actually can. <3

If you’re writing hurt!Kirk, I’m equally open to either physical or emotional h/c. For hurt!Spock, I’d prefer physical ailments, with him (at least mostly) keeping his usual low emotional affect.

    So, right, actual prompts:

  • I really love the Enterprise itself as a story setting, and especially for fic that takes place there, I’d be happy with any kind of minor ailment that might not even be serious enough to bother going to sickbay over — a hangover, a headache, exhaustion from overwork, overindulgence in enticing alien candies, insomnia, nightmares, some virus that’s going around the ship...
  • I also always enjoy seeing stories about some kind of away-mission gone awry, with Kirk or Spock falling ill or getting injured due to something that happens on an unexplored planet, or in some other unfamiliar place. There are so many options for ways to hurt these guys that it’s hard to know where to even start listing them... poisonous alien flora, weird atmospheric conditions, gravitational or pressure differences, excessive heat or cold, dangerous insects or animals, bacteria, viruses, toxic alien food, contaminated water, wounds from poisoned darts or weapons, unknown allergens, injuries from falling, cave-ins, natural disasters, shuttlecraft crashes, transporter issues, environmental suit malfunctions, bad weather, psychological trauma from encounters with the Unfathomably Cosmically Other... I mean, the ways things can go wrong in space are maybe literally infinite. XD

At any rate, I’d be down for any kind of arrangement where Kirk and Spock end up on a planet (or an asteroid, or an abandoned space station, or the shell of a wrecked ship, or whatever) and something bad happens to one of them, and there’s some obstacle to getting back to the Enterprise. In the meantime: field medicine, or a reliance on local remedies, or one character trying to keep the other conscious or carry/help them out of a dangerous place, or both of them just waiting out an unpleasant span of time until the effects of a drug or poison wear off, an illness runs its course, or conditions for returning to the ship improve.

  • I’d also enjoy seeing either Kirk or Spock ill or injured in the midst of a crisis on board the ship, and unable or unwilling to step down from their post until the danger is past, even though they may not really be fit for duty. McCoy having to practically force medical attention on his superior officers who seem to think they’re indestructible... a barely-functional Kirk (or Spock) trying to act normal on the bridge to avoid getting sent back to sickbay... maybe someone else even having to take over the helm if Kirk actually can’t (or take over the Science Station for Spock).
  • I love the idea of mixing cosmic horror tropes with this fandom. Encounters with the infinite, or forays into bizarre and terrifying alternate dimensions, or discoveries of Things That Should Not Be Known...

  • More Freeforms!
